Middle School

A School Within a School - Statements of Philosophy

In recent years, there has been renewed interest and focus on students eleven through fourteen years of age.  These students have particular social, intellectual, physical and emotional needs which affect their attitudes and behaviour and make them a unique group - different to either elementary or high school students.   It is, therefore, sound practice to provide them with a unique learning environment;   hence, the Middle School concept.

Middle School is really a school within a school, designed to facilitate the smooth transition of students from elementary school to high school.  Housed in their own wing of the building, Middle School students work in an environment which is, in many respects, similar to the one they experienced in elementary school.  At the same time, through the sharing of the facilities, they are introduced to the secondary school setting.

__ Each student in Middle School is hand-timetabled and assigned to work with a 'Core Teacher' who instructs the same 'Core Group' of students for more than one subject.  Core teachers have been selected on the basis of their commitment to working with Middle School students.  Our Core teacher concept guarantees more personal student-teacher communication. Under the watchful eye of the Core teacher and with the support of the team of subject specialists assigned to Middle School, our students are taught social and study skills, are provided with tutorials, have their homework monitored, and are encouraged to participate in a wide range of extra-curricular activities.  We are dedicated to 'Success for Every Student' and we support our young adolescents in striving to achieve their personal best.
